YOU NEVER STOPPED
You never stopped.
You changed containers.
The bottle became the career.
The career became the phone.
The phone became the relationship.
The relationship became the gym.
The gym became the side project.
The side project became the identity of a person who has their shit together.
And the identity is the most dangerous container of all because nobody stages an intervention for someone who looks like they are winning.
Fourteen years sober.
The room applauds.
The story polished until it gleams.
The rock bottom.
The bathroom floor.
The daughter.
The call.
The facility.
The therapist.
Then the meeting ends and the laptop opens at midnight and it has been opening at midnight for eight years and nobody counts this because it has a salary attached to it.
The substance was never the problem.
The substance was the solution.
It was the fastest available answer to a question the person never learned to ask.
When you remove the fastest answer without addressing the question, the question finds a slower answer.
A more respectable answer.
An answer with health insurance and a LinkedIn profile.
The hands do the same thing they have always done.
The room just applauds this version.
I know about the trade because I have made my own.
Not the same trade.
Never the same substance.
Always the same loop.
I have watched myself leave one version and walk calmly into another and call the second one growth.
I have walked away from the phone at two in the morning and sat down at the desk at five and called the second one discipline.
I have stopped one compulsion and started another and measured the distance between them in units of respectability and mistaken the measurement for recovery.
The distance was zero.
The speed was the same.
The grip was the same.
The only thing that changed was what the loop was fed, and the loop does not care what it is fed.
It will eat anything.
Here is the thing that nobody in the recovery room is saying.
The loop was there before the substance arrived.
Not the habit.
Not the pattern.
The actual loop.
A circuit in the base of your brain that fires wanting without consulting the part of you that knows whether the wanted thing is still good.
Wanting and liking are not the same system.
They were never the same system.
A rat will press a lever for cocaine until it dies not because the cocaine feels good but because the wanting circuit has been hijacked and the wanting will not stop firing regardless of what the liking circuit reports.
The rat is not weak.
The rat is wired.
You are the rat.
That is not a metaphor.
The same dopamine system.
The same hijack.
The same dissociation between the part that fires and the part that evaluates.
The only difference is that you have a prefrontal cortex that builds stories about why you pressed the lever, and the stories sound reasonable, and the reasonableness is the thing that keeps you pressing.
Here is where I am supposed to be careful.
I am not going to be careful.
The twelve steps are aimed at the wrong layer.
They are aimed at the deciding.
The deciding is not where the action is.
The cue hits.
The body moves.
The thirty seconds between the cue and the movement are the only thirty seconds that matter, and nothing in the steps addresses those thirty seconds, because the steps were written in 1938 by people who did not know those thirty seconds existed.
The accountability partner is aimed at the wrong layer.
You do not relapse in a meeting.
You relapse alone in a kitchen at eleven at night when the cue fires and there is no partner and no meeting and no step and the only thing standing between the cue and the action is a circuit that either fires a brake or does not.
The rehab facility charges thirty thousand dollars for thirty days and teaches you to identify your triggers and build a support network and journal about your feelings.
None of that builds the circuit.
The circuit is built by sitting in the presence of the cue, feeling the wanting fire, and not following it, and doing this enough times that the not following becomes wired into the same thirty second window where the following used to live.
That is exposure.
That is what actually works.
It is not sellable.
It is not a program.
It does not come with a coin or a meeting or a story you can tell six hundred times.
It comes with sitting in a room alone while something inside you screams and you do not move and nobody sees and nobody applauds and the not moving slowly, over months, builds a wire that the screaming cannot cut.
The man from the meeting will not hear this.
Not because he is not smart enough.
Because hearing it would mean the fourteen years were not what he thought they were.
He stopped the substance.
He did not stop the loop.
The loop found something that society rewards instead of punishes, and the reward hid the loop, and the hiding is so complete that he will stand up at a meeting next Thursday and say the same sentence and the room will applaud again and his wife will fall asleep on the couch again and his laptop will glow in the dark at two in the morning again and none of that will register as the same disease wearing a different face.
I am not saying his sobriety is nothing.
I am saying it is not what he thinks it is.
He stopped feeding the loop one thing and started feeding it another and called the transition freedom.
The freedom that has a wife sleeping alone.
The freedom that has children who know his schedule better than his face.
The freedom that looks exactly like the cage it replaced, except the cage has a nicer name and a benefits package.
There is a gap between the cue and the reaching.
It is there right now.
It was there when you picked up the bottle and it was there when you put the bottle down and picked up the hustle and it will be there when you put the hustle down and pick up the righteousness of having put the hustle down.
The loop does not care what you fill the gap with.
The loop runs.
It ran before the substance.
It ran during the substance.
It ran after the substance.
It is running now while you read about it.
I am not pointing you toward the gap as a solution.
The moment the gap becomes a solution the loop eats the gap and the solution becomes the next container.
I have watched this happen to myself.
I have turned awareness into a substance.
I have turned writing about the loop into the thing I reach for at midnight instead of the thing that was there before.
The only honest thing I can say is that the loop is running and I am inside it and you are inside it and the room full of people clapping is inside it and the coins and the stories and the sobriety dates are inside it and the only thing that is not inside it is the thirty seconds nobody taught you to notice.
Nobody will teach you.
Teaching you would become the next meeting.
These are words.
The mechanism they describe is not words.
You will have to look for yourself.
The mechanism this discourse stands next to lives in The Machinery of Addiction.
