YOU STOOD WHERE EVERYONE ELSE CRIED AND FELT NOTHING

He has stood at the south rim of the Grand Canyon nine hundred and fourteen times.

He keeps the count because keeping the count became easier than explaining what happens when someone asks if he ever gets used to it.

He gets used to it.

That is the thing he cannot say to the woman next to him with tears running down her face and her hand over her mouth and her husband holding her elbow because her knees went soft three steps from the railing.

She is experiencing what he experienced on his first Tuesday in the park eleven years ago.

The shiver that started at the base of his skull and ran down his arms and made the hair on his forearms stand vertical.

The stopped clock.

The moment where the self goes quiet and the thing in front of you fills the entire field of consciousness because there is nothing left of you to compete with it.

He remembers the silence.

Not the canyon’s silence.

His own.

The narrator that had been running since childhood went quiet for the first time in his adult life and what remained was a pair of eyes attached to a nervous system that could not process what it was seeing because the model it was using was too small to hold it.

That was the machinery firing.

He did not know that was what it was.

He called it awe the way everyone calls it awe without knowing that awe has parts.

The parts are specific.

Perceived vastness.

A stimulus that exceeds the current frame of reference.

Need for accommodation.

A model that must restructure because it cannot assimilate what is in front of it.

Both must fire.

Without both, you get beauty, appreciation, a pleasant memory, a photograph that performs better in the retelling than it did in the moment.

He has had beauty nine hundred and fourteen times.

The machinery has not fired since the third year.

His model expanded to contain the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon did not get smaller.

His model got larger.

And the machinery requires the model to break.

A model that already contains the thing cannot be broken by the thing.

He watches tourists cry and he envies them and the envy is the strangest feeling he has ever carried because he is envying people for having smaller models of the world than his.

They have less.

And the less is what lets the machinery fire.

I know about the silence because I have been looking for it.

That is the confession.

I have been looking for the silence the way you look for a restaurant you ate at once in a foreign city.

You remember the meal.

You remember the street.

You remember the light at the angle it hit the table.

You do not remember the address.

I felt it once at seventeen standing on a beach in a country I had no reason to be in, watching a storm build over water I had never seen, and the feeling was so large that it reorganized something behind my chest and I spent the next hour unable to speak.

Not because I was overwhelmed.

Because the part of me that generates speech had temporarily reduced its activity along with every other part that maintains the boundary between me and the world.

The default mode network.

The system that runs the narrator.

The one that says I and me and mine.

The one that compares and evaluates and plans and regrets.

It went quiet.

Not because I made it go quiet.

Because the storm exceeded the model and the model broke and in the breaking the system that maintains the self lost its signal.

I have been chasing that storm for twenty years.

I have stood at overlooks.

I have driven to mountains.

I have flown to places whose photographs exceeded what my model could hold when the photographs were all I had.

Then I arrived and the model held.

Every time.

The photographs were the trigger.

The arrival was the accommodation.

By the time I stood where the photograph was taken, my model had already restructured to include it.

The looking was the thing that prevented the finding.

I did not know this for seventeen years.

I thought the problem was the places.

The problem was never the places.

The problem was the model.

The model that already contains the canyon cannot be broken by the canyon.

The brain that has already predicted the feeling of having its predictions broken has already accommodated the breaking.

The prediction includes its own failure.

And a failure that has been predicted is not a failure.

It is confirmation.

Here is what is actually happening.

The brain builds models of the world.

Prediction machines that compress experience into expectations.

When a stimulus arrives that the model can hold, it is assimilated.

Slotted into the framework.

A bigger waterfall.

A redder sunset.

A louder symphony.

Same category, different magnitude.

The framework absorbs it without changing shape.

When a stimulus arrives that the model cannot hold, accommodation is forced.

The framework must break and reform.

The categories themselves must change shape.

The world forces the mind to restructure.

That restructuring is the feeling of awe.

Not the beauty.

Not the size.

Not the spectacle.

The restructuring itself.

The moment between the old model and the new one.

The cognitive disequilibrium.

When the default mode network quiets, the bandwidth it was using to monitor the self becomes available for the world.

The self shrinks.

The world expands to fill the space.

You feel simultaneously smaller and more connected because you are.

Less processing dedicated to maintaining you.

More processing available for the thing.

The vagus nerve fires.

Heart rate slows.

Inflammation drops.

Time expands because every moment contains more information than the model can compress.

Nothing matches prediction.

Every second is dense with novelty.

The encoding is maximal.

This is why those moments burn into memory.

High prediction error produces high encoding strength.

The machinery runs on genuine insufficiency.

The model must actually be too small.

The accommodation must be real.

And the moment you go to the overlook specifically to feel awe, you have built a prediction that includes awe.

You have a schema for the experience.

You know what you will feel.

The prediction matches.

No error.

No accommodation.

No machinery.

You get the view.

You do not get the restructuring.

The awe walk.

A concept sold in wellness magazines and prescribed by life coaches who learned the word from a TED talk and turned it into a ninety day program.

Walk slowly through nature.

Notice the details.

Feel the vastness.

The vastness you are told to feel is the vastness you are predicting.

The prediction prevents the machinery from firing.

You are walking through a landscape your model already contains with a set of instructions your model already holds looking for a feeling your model has already incorporated.

The awe walk produces appreciation.

Appreciation is not awe.

Appreciation is what happens when the model holds and you enjoy what it holds.

Awe is what happens when the model breaks.

The bucket list.

Forty destinations chosen specifically for their capacity to overwhelm.

Each one researched, photographed, reviewed, anticipated.

By the time the plane lands the model already contains the experience.

The travel guide was the accommodation.

The arrival was the confirmation.

The machinery cannot fire on a stimulus the model has already incorporated.

Gratitude practices that list three things you are in debt to, one of which is supposed to be vast enough to produce awe.

You cannot be grateful for a schema break.

Gratitude is a relationship to the known.

Awe is the destruction of the known.

They are opposite operations wearing similar faces.

The wellness retreats.

The forest bathing instructors with the laminated cards and the guided prompts.

Look at this tree.

Feel its presence.

Notice how vast it is.

The noticing is the prediction.

The prediction is the accommodation.

The accommodation happened before you arrived at the tree.

You are standing inside a model that already contains the tree feeling appreciation for a tree your model has already absorbed and calling the appreciation awe because you were told that is what it would be.

Every program that promises to cultivate wonder is a program that installs the prediction that prevents wonder from occurring.

The installation is the product.

The prevention is the subscription.

Nobody in the industry will say this because saying it would mean admitting that what they are selling cannot do what they claim it does.

Not because it is a lie.

Because the machinery of awe has a constraint that no business model can survive.

The constraint is: the machinery runs on genuine insufficiency.

And genuine insufficiency cannot be manufactured, purchased, scheduled, or prescribed.

The guide is still at the rim.

The woman next to him has stopped crying.

She is taking photographs.

The photographs will not carry the feeling.

But that is not his concern.

His concern is that he has stood at this edge nine hundred and fourteen times and the feeling that made him stay is the feeling he can no longer access because the staying is what built the model that made the feeling impossible.

The devotion was the habituation.

The proximity was the accommodation.

He became the person who could hold the Grand Canyon inside his mind without breaking, and the holding is the thing that prevents the breaking, and the breaking was the only part that ever mattered.

He will stand here again tomorrow.

He will watch someone else’s model break.

He will recognize it in their posture.

The softening.

The stopped speech.

The hands that reach for a railing because the body needs something solid when the mind has gone liquid.

He will know exactly what is happening to them because he has studied it.

The knowledge is precise.

The knowledge does not produce the feeling.

The knowledge is another layer of prediction, another wall in the model, another reason the machinery will not fire.

He loved a thing so well that his model absorbed it.

And the absorption was the end.

Not of the beauty.

The beauty is still there.

Every morning.

Same canyon.

Same light.

Same depth.

The beauty will be there until the rocks are not.

What ended was the insufficiency.

His model became sufficient.

And sufficient is the one thing the machinery cannot use.

The last time I felt it was not at a canyon or a mountain or a storm.

It was at 6:14 on a Wednesday morning in a parking lot outside a grocery store, watching a murmuration of starlings move as one body above the roof.

I had not predicted it.

I had no model for it.

The shape kept changing faster than my prediction engine could update.

Every half second the flock was something my mind had not built and would not build in time before it became something else.

The prediction hierarchy was running at full capacity and failing continuously and the errors were cascading up through the system and the default mode network could not maintain its hold against the volume of incoming novelty.

For forty seconds the narrator went quiet.

For forty seconds there was no me watching the birds.

There was the birds.

There was the processing of the birds.

There was the space where the self had been, filled now with the movement of ten thousand bodies operating on rules I could not see, producing a shape I could not predict, dissolving and reforming faster than my model could follow.

Forty seconds.

In a parking lot.

At dawn.

Not where I went looking.

Where I was not looking at all.

The machinery fires when the model breaks.

The model breaks when it encounters what it did not predict.

What it did not predict is, by definition, not where you went looking.

I know this now.

The knowing does not help.

The knowing is another prediction.

Another layer in the model.

Another reason the machinery will wait for a moment I am not expecting, which means I cannot expect it, which means the only honest posture is the one where I stop trying to find the storm I stood in at seventeen and let the parking lots be parking lots.

The machinery does not care about the venue.

It cares about the model.

When the model is insufficient, the machinery fires.

When the model is sufficient, you get beauty.

I have a lot of beauty.

I am not ungrateful for the beauty.

But I know what lives on the other side of the model breaking and it is not beauty.

It is the forty seconds where the self goes quiet and the world fills the space and the filling is so complete that there is no room left for the thing that would name it.

I cannot go looking for it.

Going looking is the model expanding to include the destination.

I can only stand in parking lots at 6:14 in the morning and let the world exceed me if it will.

The world does not owe me the exceeding.

The world does not know my model exists.

The world is just the world.

And sometimes the world is larger than what I built to hold it.

And in that sometimes, the machinery fires.

And the firing is not mine to schedule or own or reproduce.

It belongs to the gap between the model and the world.

A gap I cannot widen on purpose because the widening is the model updating to include the gap.

I am still looking.

I know that looking is the problem.

I have not stopped.

These are words. The mechanism they describe is not words. You will have to look for yourself.
