YOU CALLED IT LOVE BECAUSE YOU NEVER LEFT
Commitment is not a thing you do.
It is a thing that happens to you.
The word describes an output.
The person standing inside the output calls it a decision.
It was never a decision.
It is a specific assembly of chemistry, personality, attachment circuitry, and cultural scaffolding producing a specific behavioral result.
The result is staying.
The staying is real.
The claim that you chose it is the part that has no evidence.
He has been married for twenty three years.
Same woman.
Same house for the last sixteen.
Same career since he was twenty nine.
Everyone points to him.
The friend who has been through two divorces points to him and says some people just know how to commit.
His wife points to him at dinner parties and says he chose us and keeps choosing.
His children believe their father decided to be there every morning and that the deciding is love.
He has looked for the decision.
He cannot find it.
Not in year one, when the chemistry was loud enough to make staying feel like pursuing.
Not in year seven, when the chemistry quieted and the staying continued as if it ran on a different power source.
Not in year fourteen, when a woman at a conference held his attention for three hours and the attention felt like something he recognized from a long time ago and the drive home was unremarkable and the attention did not survive the parking lot.
Not in year twenty, when the marriage had become the substrate of his thinking and leaving would have required rebuilding the architecture of how he imagined the future and the rebuilding never seemed worth the metabolic cost of starting.
Twenty three years.
Not once did he locate a moment where the staying was a decision he made against a genuine alternative.
The staying arrived each morning the way his heartbeat arrived.
He did not choose his heartbeat either.
He just called this one love.
I watched the same pattern in a smaller frame.
Not a marriage.
A body of work.
I have been in the same kind of thinking for years now and I have never located a morning where I chose it over the alternative.
The alternative never felt like an alternative.
It felt like something other people did.
The way leaving a marriage feels to some people like something other people do.
Not because they are more virtuous.
Because their assembly does not generate the exit impulse with enough force to overcome the staying that is already running.
I used to call this dedication.
The word implies that I dedicated something.
That I took a resource and pointed it.
I did not point anything.
The pointing was already there.
The machinery that keeps me returning to the same questions is not discipline.
It is the same machinery that keeps the man in the same house for sixteen years.
Low novelty seeking in a dopamine system that reads familiarity as comfortable instead of aversive.
High persistence in a temperament structure that continues effort under weak reinforcement.
Secure enough attachment that the bond does not generate alarms that would make the bonded thing feel dangerous.
The felt experience is ease.
The mechanism underneath the ease was set before I had an opinion about it.
Here is what is underneath.
Commitment runs on an assembly.
The pair bonding chemistry writes a tag.
Oxytocin marks the specific person.
Not warmth in general.
Not closeness as a category.
This one, in this context, now.
Vasopressin holds the tag through the receptor architecture.
Not the amount of vasopressin circulating.
The density of the receptor waiting to receive it.
Prairie voles bond for life.
Montane voles mate and separate.
Same chemical.
Different receptor density in one region of the ventral pallidum.
When researchers increased the receptor density in the montane vole, the montane vole began bonding for life.
The chemistry was the difference between a species that stays and a species that does not.
In humans the parallel runs through the AVPR1A gene.
Variation in the gene that codes for the vasopressin V1a receptor predicted pair bonding behavior in men.
Men with one allele variant were less likely to be married, more likely to report relationship crisis, and scored lower on partner bonding scales.
The receptor density was set before any partner arrived.
Then the personality structure loads.
Conscientiousness.
The disposition to follow through, complete what was started, honor agreements.
Roughly half heritable.
The conscientious person stays in a relationship the way they stay in a queue.
Not because the queue is rewarding.
Because leaving a queue before its end is structurally aversive to a temperament that completes what it enters.
Then the prediction error fork.
The same partner, across five years, generates declining novelty.
The dopamine system quiets because the partner is predicted and predicted means low error and low error means low signal.
One brain reads the quiet as boring.
Another reads it as safe.
Not preference.
A difference in how the prediction error signal is interpreted at higher levels of the system.
The same partner, the same five years, producing opposite readings in two assemblies that walked into the relationship with different wiring.
Then the opioid layer.
The felt experience of home.
The warmth that fires every time the bonded person is present.
Quiet.
Not exciting.
Present.
The couples whose chemistry transitions from the dopamine of pursuit to the opioid of inhabiting are the ones who experience the long bond as deepening.
The couples who never make that transition experience the dopamine decay as a verdict.
The relationship is not dying.
The chemistry is changing hands.
Some assemblies make the transition.
Some do not.
The difference is not in the relationship.
It is in the assembly underneath it.
The commitment industry sells the output as an input.
The marriage counselor at two hundred dollars an hour.
Choose your partner every day.
The choosing was never the mechanism.
The mechanism was the assembly producing the staying and the staying being narrated as choosing by a conscious mind that was never consulted.
Renewal of vows.
A ceremony in which two people stand in front of witnesses and recommit to the thing that was never a commitment in the first place.
A receptor density renewing its vow to a gene variant.
Date night.
The scheduled novelty injection prescribed to counteract the prediction error decay.
Not useless.
Dopamine responds to novelty.
But the prescription assumes the decay is the disease.
The decay is the baseline.
The baseline is what commitment runs on after the first two years.
If the opioid layer is there, the baseline feels like home.
If it is not, the baseline feels like a sentence.
Date night does not treat the assembly.
It briefly overrides one signal without addressing the architecture that determines whether the quiet that returns after the date feels like rest or like resignation.
Relationship books with lighthouses on the cover.
Seven habits.
Five languages.
Four horsemen.
Each aimed at the behavioral layer.
Each assuming the behavior produces the bond.
The behavior does not produce the bond.
The bond produces the behavior.
The assembly underneath produces the bond.
The assembly was loaded before the behavior began.
The entire industry is selling technique for an outcome that is primarily determined by receptor density, personality inheritance, attachment wiring from infancy, and the scaffolding the culture bolted onto the outside.
Technique is not nothing.
It is the fraction of the variance left over after the assembly has cast its vote.
He does not know this.
The man who has been married for twenty three years.
He does not know about the V1a receptor or the AVPR1A gene or the novelty seeking dimension or the prediction error fork.
He knows that he stayed.
That the staying felt like love.
That the love felt like something he did rather than something that happened to him.
He will never ask the question the machinery poses.
Would this assembly have produced the same staying with a different woman.
The answer, mechanistically, is probably.
The receptor density would have been the same.
The conscientiousness would have been the same.
The novelty seeking would have been the same.
The opioid response to proximity would have fired on whoever the system tagged.
The tag is specific.
The capacity to tag is not.
The capacity was there before she was.
He did not build the staying.
The staying was loaded.
She happened to be what the loaded system was pointed at.
This does not make the marriage fake.
The love is real.
The chemistry that produces it is real.
The twenty three years are real.
What is not real is the story that he could have been different.
That another man, with another assembly, pointed at the same woman, would have produced the same twenty three years.
The twin studies say half of the variance in who stays married and who divorces is heritable.
Half.
Set before he took his first breath.
The other half includes the partner, the economics, the culture, and the cumulative accidents of a life.
Almost none of it is the willpower the folk story credits.
I stay in things.
I know this about myself the way I know the color of my eyes.
Not as an achievement.
As a description of what the assembly does when it is placed inside a container.
I stay in work past the point where the excitement has decayed because the quiet that follows the excitement does not read as aversive in my system.
It reads as familiar.
I stay in questions past the point where the question has yielded its easy answers because the persistence temperament continues effort under weak reinforcement and the weak reinforcement does not feel like punishment.
It feels like the normal temperature of the room.
I stay in commitments because the cost of leaving, computed by a system that weights loss more heavily than gain, always exceeds the cost of staying, computed by a system that requires nothing to maintain the current state.
Leaving costs everything.
Staying costs nothing.
Nothing wins.
Every morning.
Without being asked.
I cannot tell if the staying is love or if the staying is the assembly producing a behavior I learned to call love because the culture had no other word for a machine that holds.
I cannot tell because the experience of staying and the experience of being held by an assembly that produces staying are, from the inside, the same experience.
The bonded human and the stuck human exhibit identical behavior.
The mechanism cannot tell the difference.
Neither can the person inside it.
I am inside it.
The assembly runs.
It has always run.
I watch it produce the same output it has always produced and I call the output mine and the calling is the one part that might actually be chosen and even that I am not sure about.
I stay.
The mechanism stays.
I cannot find the seam between the two.
These are words. The mechanism they describe is not words. You will have to look for yourself.
