YOU WANTED THE WANTING

You do not want the thing.

You never wanted the thing.

You want the wanting.

The apartment.

Eleven months of looking.

The courtyard.

The light at seven in the morning.

You get the keys and stand in the kitchen and the light is exactly what you imagined and the feeling lasts ninety seconds and then it walks out of the room like it was never planning to stay.

Within three minutes you are scanning for what needs to change.

The couch.

The couch is wrong.

You did not know this until the reaching had nowhere left to go and the reaching cannot die so it found the couch and attached itself there.

This is not a flaw.

This is the design.

The reaching is the product.

The object is the container.

The container is interchangeable.

The apartment.

The body.

The relationship.

The promotion.

You swap containers your entire life and never once examine the reaching because the reaching feels like being alive and you are terrified of what is underneath the aliveness.

Underneath the aliveness is a vacuum.

The reaching exists to keep you from feeling it.

Nobody told you this.

The entire economy runs on you never finding out.

I have watched this in myself enough times to know the shape.

The promotion that was supposed to change the way mornings felt.

It changed the way mornings felt for about four days.

The relationship that was supposed to end the searching.

The searching moved into the relationship and found new things to search for inside it before the first month was over.

The move.

The body.

The publication.

Every arrival I have ever made was followed by the same quiet migration of the reaching to the next available surface.

I did not choose the next surface.

The engine chose, and my mind arrived thirty seconds later with a story about why I had always been more interested in this other thing, and the story was so fast and so fluent that I nodded along because the nodding was easier than the question.

The question is the one I am giving you now.

You do not want the thing.

You want the wanting.

The wanting is a dopamine system and the dopamine system does not encode the having.

It encodes the anticipation.

The distance between where you are and where you think the reward is.

The moment the distance closes, the dopamine drops, because the system was never about the destination.

It was about the gap.

The gap is the product.

The gap is what feels like being alive.

The arrival is the gap closing and the closing feels like dying and your brain knows this and your brain will not let you stay arrived for more than a few minutes before it opens a new gap and hands you a new brochure and says look at this.

You have been reading brochures your whole life.

You bought the brochure.

You spent your twenties working for the brochure.

Your thirties trying to make the brochure happen and quietly noticing that even the parts that happened did not match the picture.

Your forties, if you are someone who lets themselves look, watching the brochure dissolve in your hand while the wanting walks calmly into the next room and picks up a new one.

This is where the gratitude people arrive.

The presence people.

The contentment people.

They have a fix for the engine.

The fix is the engine wearing a different outfit.

The gratitude journal is the wanting wearing a robe.

The vision board is the wanting wearing a suit.

The abundance meditation is the wanting with its eyes closed.

The goal setting workshop is the wanting with a spreadsheet.

You cannot set an intention that undoes a circuit that runs underneath intention.

The intention is the circuit talking.

You thought it was you.

I thought it was me.

I sat in the room with everything I wanted present and the wanting was still running and I tried to be grateful for what I had and the gratitude was the reaching wearing a halo and I tried to set goals that would finally close the gap and the goals were the gap manufacturing new versions of itself.

The engine was there before I had a self to be grateful with.

It will be there when everything I currently call my self has been replaced three times over.

Every arrival produces the same ninety seconds followed by the same migration to the next available surface.

I have watched this fifty times.

The fiftieth time is not enlightenment.

The fiftieth time is exhaustion wearing the mask of clarity.

I have no fix for this.

If I had a fix it would be the next brochure.

The people who say they have a fix are the ones selling you the container you will stand in ninety seconds from now scanning for what needs to change.

I am still inside the engine.

I am writing about the engine from inside the engine.

The writing is probably the engine too.

The difference is I stopped pretending the engine is me and the stopping did not make the engine quieter.

It made the engine visible.

That is all.

The visible version is not better.

It is just honest.

And honest is the only thing in this room that is not for sale.

These are words.

The mechanism they describe is not words.

You will have to look for yourself.

The mechanism this discourse stands next to lives in The Machinery of Desire.
