THE MACHINERY OF NO INPUT

The Floor With Nothing On It

Not the deepest silence. The place before silence has anything to be quiet about.

There is a state you want more than you have ever wanted anything.

I am not going to sell it to you. I have nothing to sell. I am going to tell you what it is, and why you cannot have it, and both of those are mechanical facts.

You have never named it. You named the things you thought would deliver it. Money. Rest. The person. The finished thing. Silence.

None of those were it. They were the noises you hoped would finally let it through.

The thing itself has no name. A name is already a mark, and it lives beneath the marking.

I will give you the closest words come. Then I will show you why the words do not reach it. And neither will you.

It is the state where nothing registers.

No input. Nothing arriving. Nothing being made into a something you then have to hold.

Not a quiet mind. A quiet mind is still a mind, still running, still turning the world into pieces it can watch.

Beneath that.

Where the turning has not started. Where there is no world yet, and no you for a world to press against.

You will assume this is death, or blankness, or nothing worth wanting.

It is the only thing you have ever wanted. And you cannot have it. And the reason you cannot have it is the whole of what follows.

Let me take you down through the floors.

Each one, you thought, was the bottom.

None of them were.

PART ONE: THE MANUFACTURE

You Have Never Received Anything

Begin with the lie so old you take it for your own body.

That the world comes to you.

That you sit here, open, and the room pours in. The light. The sound of the fan. The weight of your own hands.

You are certain you are receiving. You have been receiving your whole life. It is the most obvious fact there is.

It is not a fact. It is a production.

The brain is not a window. It is a factory that runs a guess about the world and checks the guess against a thin trickle of signal, and hands you the guess (Rao and Ballard, 1999).

What you call the room is the guess.

The signal only ever gets a vote. It nudges the guess where the guess was wrong. It does not deliver the room. The room was already being built before the signal arrived.

Look at the wiring and it stops being philosophy.

Far more nerve runs downward, carrying prediction out toward the senses, than runs upward carrying the raw world in. The machine is mostly talking to itself. Mostly projecting. Barely listening.

So every moment you ever called contact was a thing you made.

A cut. A this pulled out of a field that was not yet this or that. A stamp brought down on undivided ground.

And the stamp is fast. Faster than attention. Faster than the you who would catch it.

You are never there when it happens. You arrive after. Holding the finished object. Sure it was handed to you.

It was not handed to you.

You made it, in the act of turning to look.

That making has a name in this machinery. Registration.

Registration is not something the world does to you. It is something you do to the world.

And you never stop doing it. Not once. Not for a single waking second.

The exhaustion you cannot explain is this. You are manufacturing a universe, ceaselessly, and calling it rest to merely watch the factory run.

The body never asked for any of this. It eats. It sleeps. It heals a cut without your permission. It will die on its own schedule and never once consult you.

The wanting was never in the body. It is in the thought that borrowed your name.

The First Move Is Already Too Late

There is a teaching that gets close and stops one door short.

It says: there is a first movement and a second.

The first is the organism meeting the world. Clean. No residue. The eye reads, the body answers, and nothing is claimed.

The second is the self. The commentary. The one who says this happened to me and here is what it means.

Kill the second movement and you have stillness. That teaching is true. It is also not the bottom.

Because the first movement is a movement.

The meeting is still a meeting. The clean stamp is still a stamp. Something still lands, even when there is no one there to catch it and no story wrapped around it.

The state with no input is not the first movement made pure.

It is before the first movement.

No meeting. No stamp. No reaching toward a world to turn it into a world.

Every practice you have ever heard of works above this line. It cleans the second movement, or dissolves it, and leaves the first one shining.

None of them cross under.

Because under the line there is no shining, because shining is a thing that registers, and here nothing registers at all.

HOW FAR DOWN THE METHODS GO

the story about it ← thinking works here
the one who watches it ← noticing works here
the clean meeting ← stillness works here
──────────────────────────── the floor of every path
no meeting at all ← nothing works here
                                because working is a meeting

PART TWO: THE ONE WHO WATCHES

Watching Is Not the Bottom

The finest thing anyone was ever taught is to watch.

See the thought before it becomes a mood. Catch the flinch as it fires. Stand behind the movement instead of inside it.

It works. It is the most freeing move there is. A pattern cannot run you the same way once you have seen it clearly as a pattern.

And it is not the floor.

Because watching needs something to watch.

It needs a mark already made. A this set against a that. A shape already cut from the ground.

To watch a thought, the thought had to register first. To watch the breath, the breath had to land.

Even to watch the mind be empty, the emptiness has to register as a this-empty against a that-full. That is a mark. That is an input. And the one making it is awake and working hard.

Watching is not the opposite of registering.

Watching is registering in its finest robe. People reach it and build a home in it and call the home the ground.

The state with no input is beneath the watcher.

Not a better watcher. Not a watcher so soft it barely stirs the water.

Beneath. Where there is nothing to watch, because nothing has been cut out, because the hand that cuts never moved.

No empty field, calmly observed. No field. No observer.

The dark before the watcher and the watched fall out of the same undivided dark.

The Last Thing You Would Give Up

I will take the last one from you now. The one you were sure was yours.

Everything can fall silent, and one thing seems to stay.

You.

Not the thoughts. Not the story. The bare sense of being here. Awareness knowing itself. The plain fact of I-am that sits under everything and never leaves.

People arrive at this and stop, and they are right to be moved, because it is deeper than the noise and quieter than the story.

They are wrong that it is the floor.

They found the last input, not the ground.

The sense of being here is itself a thing being made. The self is not a possession. It is a model, built fresh moment by moment, and mistaken by the one who wears it for a fact (Metzinger, 2020).

I-am is that model, generated and read. The same cut as any other. The same stamp. Only turned around to fall on the machine itself.

It feels like bedrock for one reason only. It is the one registration that never switches off while you are awake to check.

And a thing that is always there when you look is easy to call a thing that is always there.

It is not always there.

It is the last movement, running quiet, wearing the mask of the floor.

So when this machinery says no input, it means this too.

Not only the loud chain. The thought that lights the feeling that drives the hand. Yes, that, gone.

The quiet I-am beneath the chain as well.

The witness is inside. It is made. It is read. It is input.

Where there is no input, there is not even the one who would notice its absence.

Because the one is a something. And here, nothing is being made into a something at all.

PART THREE: THE NEAR COPY

The Mind Sells You a Fake

The moment you understand the words no input, the mind hands you a forgery.

It is close. It is cheap. It is available tonight.

Numbness.

The flat gray where nothing tastes of anything. The pane of glass between you and the room. The old distance you learned young, that keeps the world an arm away so it can never land hard enough to cut.

The mind offers these because they feel, from the inside, a little like nothing arriving.

They are the exact reverse of it.

Numbness is not the absence of registration. It is registration jammed.

The organism is still reaching for the world. Still trying to make the cut, still trying to finish the contact. And the signal is being choked halfway through.

A thing half-felt. Contact stalled in its own motion, leaking, unfinished. And the unfinished contact sits in the body and calls itself calm.

The numb one is not below input.

He is drowning in input he cannot process, and the glass is the emergency wall he threw up to keep the flood from reaching the floor.

It is a wound doing a good impression of peace.

No input is not a failure to receive.

It is the ground under receiving. Where the whole question of receive or not-receive has not yet come up.

The numb organism is a receiver with a fault. Straining, muffled, cut off from a world it can still almost reach.

The state with no input is not a broken receiver. There is no receiver.

Nothing is kept out, because nothing is let in, because the wall between in and out was never built.

One is a jammed meeting. The other is the ground the meeting never happened on.

They are as far apart as a thing can be.

And the mind will hand you the first while whispering it is the second, because the first is here tonight and the second cannot be reached at all.

How to Tell Them Apart

There is one difference you can feel, if you will be honest about it.

Numbness has weight. It costs. It has to be held.

There is effort in the glass. A low, unbroken strain of keeping the world at its distance. And under the flatness, the pressure of everything unfelt, pushing to be felt.

Numbness is work. Expensive, draining work, dressed as calm, quietly bleeding the one who wears it.

The ground has no weight. Because weight is a registration.

It costs nothing. Because there is no one there to spend.

It is not held. Because there is no holder, and nothing to hold.

You cannot feel it as a state, the way you feel numbness as a state. To feel it as a state would be to register it. And the registering would already have carried you up and out.

So here is the test, and it does not fail.

If it is heavy, if it takes effort, if there is a you inside it keeping it going, it is the fake. However still it looks.

The real ground is the one you were never inside. Because being inside it would take an input, and there is none.

The only signature it leaves is that it cost you nothing.

PART FOUR: THE REACH IS THE WALL

You Cannot Want Your Way In

Now the center of the whole thing. I cannot soften this one, so I will not try.

You want in.

Of course you do. Under every other want you have ever had, this was the one. The place with no input. The true rest. The end of the endless labor of cutting a world out of the dark just to have a world.

So the machine does the one thing it knows to do with a destination.

It makes it a task.

Reach for no-input. Practice the absence of contact. Aim, with all you have, at the ground.

And the aim is an input.

The reach is a movement. The wanting is the faintest thought pulling the faintest feeling toward the faintest act.

Every approach to the place with no input is itself an input.

So in the very motion of going toward it, you make the one thing whose absence was the destination.

You cannot walk to the place where there is no walking.

The walking is what keeps you out.

The one who would arrive is the wall. And the wall is not standing there waiting to be climbed. It is poured fresh, in each instant of trying, out of the trying.

This is not a hard reach that a better teacher would finish.

It is an impossible one.

Impossible the way a hand cannot grip itself. The way an eye cannot turn and see its own seeing.

The seeking is the input. No-input cannot be sought, because the seeking is the very presence of the thing you sought the absence of.

So the harder you reach, the more you make. And the further the ground seems to fall away.

It never moved.

You did. You filled the room with reaching and then wept that you could not find the silence.

    WHY IT CANNOT BE REACHED

you reach for it → the reach is a movement
the movement → is a registration
    the registration → is input
so the reach itself → makes the exact thing
                               whose absence was the goal

    ───────────────────────────────────────────────
every step toward it is built out of its opposite

It Is Not at the Top of the Stairs

So you climb. Climbing is the only thing the machine knows.

Noise to calm. Calm to the watcher. The watcher to the silence under it.

Each floor quieter than the last. And you take the stairs to be pointing somewhere. You take the top step to be near the goal.

The stairs do not point at the ground.

The stairs are made of registrations. Each step a finer input than the one below.

And no sum of finer inputs will ever come to no input.

You do not reach zero by halving. Every step, however fine, is still a something. A tower of somethings is not the nothing it stands on.

The state with no input is not the top of the stairs.

It is off them.

Not the highest floor on the ladder, but the thing the whole ladder sits inside and cannot turn to face. The way the eye cannot turn to face the socket it looks out of.

It is not above stillness. It is not behind it.

It is under the floor stillness stands on. In a direction the stairs were never cut to go.

And the stairs are the only legs you have.

This is why the ones who want it most, and climb the hardest, and train the longest, are in exactly the wrong shape.

The climbing is the input. The input is the wall.

The better they climb, the more solid they build the thing between themselves and the floor.

PART FIVE: WHAT IS LEFT

The Minute Before Your Name

You have been there. You never held it, because holding is a mark, and it will not be marked.

Some mornings there is a minute before the day has a name.

You are awake. Your eyes may even be open.

And for one breath, before the machine starts, there is no phone, no list, no self, no story of who you are and what you owe and how far behind you have fallen.

It is not peace. Peace is a thing you would feel.

This is before the thing.

Nothing has moved toward anything. No thought has lit a feeling. No feeling has leaned the body at the world.

Nothing is being sorted. No good and bad. No yes and no dividing the ground into things to want and things to push away.

Just the floor. At the surface. For a breath. Unclaimed.

And then it starts.

The name of the day arrives. The self gathers around the name.

The first cut is made. Then the next. And the factory spins up to full speed.

By the time your hand is on the phone there is a whole world, and a whole you standing in it.

And you have already forgotten that a breath ago there was neither.

You have forgotten that the neither was not empty. Was not lacking. Did not sit there wanting the world to come and fill it.

It was whole. In the only way the ground is ever whole. By not being a thing that could be missing anything.

That breath is the nearest the floor ever comes to the surface.

And you did nothing to earn it.

You could not have. It came in the one window where the reaching had not yet begun again. Where nothing yet was being made. Where there was, for a breath, no input.

And the proof that it is the thing, and not a state you could train, is that you cannot get back in by trying.

The instant you turn to look for that early quiet, you have marked it as a thing to look for. And the marking is the day starting. And it is gone.

It does not shut you out to be cruel.

It shuts you out because wanting is an input. And it is the place with none.

Not Even Yes

The old books keep failing to say it, and the failing is the truest thing in them.

It is not bliss. Bliss is registered.

It is not peace. Peace is a state, and a state is a something held.

It is not emptiness. An emptiness is a this-empty marked off from a that-full, and the marking is an input.

It is not even awareness, if awareness means a light that knows itself. The knowing is a registration turned back on its own glow.

Every word for it is a something. And it lies beneath the somethings. So every word overshoots the moment it is spoken, just by being a word.

It is not even yes.

It is not even no.

Yes and no are the first cut. The oldest one. Safe and danger. Toward and away. Mine and not.

That cut is already an input. Already the machine turning over.

The ground lies beneath the cut. Before the field is split into the two things that yes and no are asked to choose between.

Not a great yes that holds everything. Not a calm no that lets it all go.

Beneath the place where yes and no are even possible. Because there are not yet two things for them to stand between.

This is why it cannot be taught, or sold, or practiced, or promised.

Every teaching is an input. Every practice is a movement. Every promise is a something held out to a someone.

And here there is no someone, and no something to pass across.

The most anyone can do, the most this can do, is point at the floor under your feet and say there is a direction beneath it your legs do not walk.

Not so you will reach. The reach is the wall, and would only raise it.

Only so that when the machine goes quiet on its own, not because you stilled it but because for one unearned breath it simply did not start, you might know the ground you are not standing on.

And not reach.

And not mark it.

And let the not-marking be the only thing that was ever the floor.

I have nothing to give you. There is no one here giving it, and no one there to take it. This is mechanism, not advice, not a path. A path is walked, and the walking is the input. These are words, and the floor they point at is not made of words, and not made of anything, because a made thing is a registered thing. You will have to see it, and there is no you to see it, and no seeing that reaches it. That is not a riddle to be solved. There is nothing to solve, and no one to solve it. It is the machine, laid open.
