THE MACHINERY OF LOWERING THE PRIOR

The Weight You Mistook For Certainty

How a guess grows heavy, why the heaviest guesses feel most like the world, and why the weight comes off only where you are surprised and do not defend

I am going to take a weight off you.

Not by lifting it. I cannot lift it, and neither can you, and the trying to lift it is most of what is holding it on.

You think your problem is that some of your beliefs are wrong. It is not. A wrong belief that sits light corrects itself the moment the world contradicts it, and costs you nothing on the way. That is not where you suffer.

You suffer under the ones that sit heavy. The guess about yourself you have carried so long it stopped feeling like a guess. The read on the person you settled years ago and never reopened. The certainty that drops into your chest before you have looked, and will not lift no matter what the looking finds.

A guess is not true or false, first. First it is heavy or light. And the weight is a thing all its own, running underneath the content, deciding how hard the guess holds and how much of the world it can refuse.

This is the machinery of that weight. Where it comes from. Why the heaviest guesses are the ones that feel least like guesses and most like the plain world. And why the one move that takes the weight off is not a move, and cannot be made by the one who most wants to make it.

There is no comfort in this. If you came to get lighter by an act of will, you are in the wrong room. I am going to show you a mechanism, and the one running it is you, and the part I am about to show you is the part that gets heavier every time you push on it.

PART ONE: THE WEIGHT

Not True Or False. Heavy Or Light.

Every prediction the mind makes carries a second number, underneath the guess itself.

The guess is the content. He is angry. I will fail this. She does not respect me. The second number is how much the mind trusts that guess against whatever the world is about to say. Call it the weight. In the machine it is precision, the confidence assigned to a prior, the setting that decides how much incoming detail it would take to move it (Feldman and Friston, 2010).

A light guess is held with the world still invited. The first plain fact that does not fit it gets in, and the guess bends.

A heavy guess is held against the world. The facts that do not fit are turned away at the door, and the ones that do fit are waved through, and the guess does not bend, because nothing that could bend it is being let near.

This is the thing to see before anything else. The weight is not the truth of the guess. A true guess can sit light and a false one can sit crushingly heavy. The weight is a separate dial, and where it sits decides not whether you are right, but whether you can be reached.

Heavy Feels Like Certainty. Certainty Feels Like Truth.

Here is why you have never caught the weight at work.

A heavy guess does not feel heavy from the inside. It feels certain. And certainty does not feel like a strong opinion. It feels like the plain world, sitting there being obviously the case.

The weight hides as the givenness of the fact. The more precision the mind pours into a guess, the less the guess feels like a guess and the more it feels like something it is simply seeing (Clark, 2013). At full weight, a guess stops presenting as anything the mind is doing. It presents as the world, and you as the one plainly seeing it.

So you cannot find your heaviest priors by looking for your strongest opinions. Your strongest opinions you can feel holding. Your heaviest priors you cannot feel at all, because they are not opinions you have. They are the world you are looking through. The weight went invisible exactly by getting large enough to become the floor you stand on.

Look at what the weight bought itself. Not agreement. Invisibility. It got so heavy it stopped being a thing she could examine and became the eye she examined everything else with.

What Makes A Guess Heavy

The weight goes on in ways you would never suspect, because none of them are about whether the guess is true.

It goes on through repetition. A guess confirmed a thousand times, even by evidence the guess itself selected, gets heavier with each pass.

It goes on through cost. A guess you paid for dearly, in fear or shame or a decision you cannot take back, gets weight from the price, because to lighten it now would be to have paid for nothing.

It goes on through charge. A guess laid down in a moment of terror or humiliation arrives pre-loaded, wired to the body, heavier at birth than a lifetime of calm ones.

And it goes on, most of all, through defense. Every time the guess is questioned and you rise to defend it, the defending adds weight. Not the guess winning the argument. The act of taking up its side. You cannot defend a prior without paying it precision, and the precision is the weight, and so the very act of protecting a belief from doubt is the act of making it heavier and harder to ever move.

This is the trap folded into the machine. The priors that run your life got heavy the same way you would try to fix them. By being gone over, argued for, defended, held. Attention paid to a guess is weight paid to a guess, whichever way the attention leans.

PART TWO: WHAT THE WEIGHT DOES

The Weight Is The Distance

A heavy prior does not only make you wrong in a stubborn way. It does something more mechanical, and worse.

Recall what the guess actually is. Not a screen between you and a world that already stand apart. The guess is the crease that throws up a you and a world in one stroke and holds them apart, and calls the holding-apart the distance between them. And it presents as a cut, a clean severance, but nothing is ever really parted. It is a fold that parts nothing, because there were never two, and the felt severance is only the fold pulled tight.

The weight is how tight.

A light guess is a fold barely creased. The you and the thing it throws up are close, almost touching, and the smallest new detail runs across both faces at once and flattens the crease back toward nothing.

A heavy guess is a fold pulled hard. It throws up a you and a thing and drags them far apart and pins them there, and the space it opens between them is exactly the space the disturbance lives in. The further the fold is stretched, the more world is shut out of the gap, and the more it aches.

So the weight is not just how wrong you can be. It is how alone you are in the moment. How far the one this is happening to has been dragged from the thing that is happening. A heavy prior is a wide fold, and a wide fold is a lonely one, a large self held far from a large world with a great strained distance between, all of it one crease, pulled tight.

He was not far from his son because of what the son did. He was far because the prior was heavy, and heavy is far, and the far is the whole of what he felt.

You Cannot Set The Dial

Now the difficulty that undoes every technique.

You have understood, reading this, that the weight is the problem, and already the mind has moved to the obvious response. Turn the dial down. Hold the heavy ones more loosely. Lower the priors.

You cannot. And seeing exactly why you cannot is most of the work.

To lower a prior on purpose, you would have to take it up, hold it in view, and press its weight down. But taking it up and holding it in view is attending to it, and attention paid is weight paid. You would be pressing down on one end of the guess with the whole force of your focus on it, which is loading the other end at the same rate. The harder you worked to lighten it, the more precision you would pour into it by working, and the heavier it would sit.

And there is a deeper reason, underneath the mechanical one. The one who would lower the prior is a prior. The I who steps up to hold its beliefs loosely, to become open, correctable, light, is itself a guess the machine threw up, and a heavy one, worn smooth by every hour you have spent wanting to be that person. It cannot lower the others, because it is made of the same stuff, and its lowering of them is one more thing it does to feel like itself, which is one more stone on its own pile.

You cannot lower the prior. The lowerer is a prior. This is not a wall to break through by pressing harder. Pressing harder is the wall.

PART THREE: WHERE THE WEIGHT COMES OFF

Only The World Takes It Off, And Only If You Let It

The weight does come off. Not by your hand. There is one thing in the whole machine that lowers a prior, and it is not you.

It is prediction error. The moment the guess said one thing and the detail ran another, and the mismatch is registered and not turned away. That is the only event that takes weight off a prior. Not argument. Not resolve. Not a better belief laid over the old one. A mismatch, admitted (Rescorla and Wagner, 1972; Schultz, Dayan, and Montague, 1997). The world contradicting the guess, and the contradiction allowed to land instead of waved off at the door.

Every heavy prior is heavy partly because it has been spending its life turning these mismatches away. The interpreter meets each one at the threshold and produces the reason it does not count. That is not what happened. She did not mean it. This time is different, or this time is the same. The mismatch is disqualified, and the weight stays on, and the guess sails through another day of contradiction untouched.

So the weight does not come off by adding anything. It comes off by one specific thing not being done. The turning-away, left undone. The mismatch, met and not disqualified. The surprise, held open long enough for the world to write on the guess before the reason rushes in to protect it.

And you do not do that either. Not-turning-away is not a move you make. It is the absence of the move you always make. The interpreter’s rush to disqualify the surprise, not performed, for once, and in the gap where it usually is, the world gets in, and the weight drops by exactly the amount of surprise you did not defend against.

He did not lower the prior. He stopped defending it for the length of one surprise, and the world did the rest.

Seeing The Weight As Weight

There is a place this reaches its floor, and it is not a technique.

When a heavy prior fires and is seen, not as the world, but as a heavy guess, a thing carrying weight, something in it has, for that moment, stopped passing for the floor. Not because seeing is a tool you wield on the prior. Do not make the seeing into a seer standing over the guess, lightening it from a place of its own. There is no such one, and if there were, it would be the heaviest prior in the room. The seeing is the guess showing as a guess, with no one behind the showing. And a guess that shows as a guess is, in that showing, no longer the pure world it was passing for.

Do not turn that into a promise. It does not reliably lighten the guess, and you cannot summon it, and there is nothing in it to keep or to count. The showing is not a move that produces an effect. It is not two events, a watcher between them working the second from the first. It is one thing, and there is no one in it, and no outcome you can bank.

This is why it can never be a practice. The instant you take up seeing-the-weight as a thing to do each morning, to get lighter, to become the open one, you have made the seeing into a move, and the mover is a prior, and a heavy one, and you are loading yourself again under a quieter name. A man keeping a daily count of the priors he lowered is carrying the heaviest one in the house, and calling it progress.

PART FOUR: WHAT IS LEFT

There Is No Light One To Become

You have been reading this as though lightness were a state you could arrive at, a version of you that holds everything loosely, standing clear at last of the heavy priors, finally correctable, finally open.

There is no such one to become, and reaching for it is the last weight.

The lightness is not a self you build by lowering enough priors. When a heavy prior goes slack, there is not a light, clear person left standing where the weight was, holding the world at the right distance now. There is only a fold gone slacker. A you and a thing not dragged so far apart. And when it goes all the way slack, in the moments it happens to, there is not a light one meeting a plain world across a small clean gap. There is no gap, and so no one on the near side of it holding anything loosely, and nothing on the far side being lightly held.

You did not make those moments. You have had them, when a certainty you had carried for years simply was not there for an afternoon, and the person or the day stood in front of you without the weight, and it was not that you had gotten light. It was that the fold had gone slack, and in the slack there was barely a you and a thing to hold a weight between.

What This Is Not

This is not a technique for lowering your priors. There is no move I have handed you, because the mover is a prior and the moving loads it.

This is not a lighter way to live that you install and maintain. To maintain lightness you would have to weigh yourself daily, and the scale is the heaviest prior there is.

This is not knowledge to keep. The moment “I see the weight on my guesses” becomes a thing you own, it is a new guess, heavy with ownership, and it holds the world off like all the rest, and you are the one with the count again.

And it is not a homecoming. There is no light true self waiting under the heavy ones for you to uncover, no clear ground you get back to once the weight is off. If you leave this reaching for the light one, a there beyond the here where the priors are finally low, you have laid the heaviest guess of all and called it freedom.

U.G. Krishnamurti said everything he offered was to be thrown out. This too. Especially this. And throw out with it the light self, and the low priors, and the open mind you were going to become, because those are the heaviest guesses, the quietest ones, the ones that feel like the answer. And throw out the weight and the fold along with them, and the mismatch, and the machine itself. There is no scale behind the seeming, weighing it, and no engine under it, guessing. The weight, the prior, the prediction error, the machine, all of them are words laid on the not-two so it could be spoken. There is no under, and nothing running there.

Read it, let it do its one job of showing you the machine, and let it go.

    └────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

I told you at the start I would take a weight off you.

I have not lifted it. I cannot, and the lifting was most of what held it on. What I have taken is the belief that the weight was the truth of the thing, and that you were the one carrying it, and that a lighter you was waiting on the far side of enough lowering.

There was no one carrying it. The weight was the tightness of a fold that threw up a carrier and a carried in the same stroke. And it comes off, when it comes off, not by a hand, but in the one place the world is let in without being turned away, where a surprise is met and not disqualified, and the fold, unfunded for a moment, goes slack on its own.

Do not practice this. Do not lower your priors. Do not become the light one. That one is the heaviest guess left. Watch the next heavy certainty arrive and pass itself off as the plain world. Watch the one who wants to set it down. That one is a guess too, and a heavy one.

Seen as weight, the guess is not the plain world it was passing for, and where it hung there is no plain world waiting and no light one waiting.

The guessing goes on, and the weighting with it, for as long as the words do. But a weight felt as weight is not the floor.

And there was never anyone standing on it.
