THE MACHINERY OF THE EMPTY WORD
The Word You Call The World
How a you and a world come up together out of the same word, why the word feels like the distance between them, and what is left standing when the word goes quiet
I am going to take the world from you.
Not a belief inside it. The whole of it. The world you are dead certain you are looking at right now. The room. The light. The life. The people in it.
You feel a you here. You feel a world out there. And you feel a word running in between, naming the world for the you.
Watch that between. It is the one thing that is not there.
There is nothing on two sides. There is no you standing on one side and no thing standing on the other with a word laid across the gap. The word comes, and only then is there a you. Only then is there a world. The word does not run across the gap. It makes the gap. It makes the two of you out of nothing, and then it turns around and swears the two were there all along.
The word is doing all of it.
You have never once touched the world, because there was never a two to touch across. There was you, talking. And out of the talking came a you here and a world there.
You do not see the chair. Try it. Look at the chair. Say the word chair. A chair comes up over there, and a you comes up over here, looking at it. Both at once, out of the one word. Now take the word off it. Just for a second. Where is the chair? Where are you? You cannot find either one. There was never a you and a chair. The word made both, in the same breath, and then told you they were a mile apart.
And it is worse with a person. Bring up someone you have known for years. Say the name in your head. Watch what comes up. A whole person. Finished. Known. Filed. You are not seeing them. You are seeing the word, thick with years, and the word is standing exactly where they are, so close you have never once caught the gap between the two. Take the name off. For one second. There is a breathing stranger there you have never met, and the word has been standing in the doorway your whole life, so you would not have to.
The word is a guess. A fast, cheap, invisible guess. And it does not lie over some real thing that was already there. There is no real thing under it. The word coughs up a you and coughs up a thing and calls the space between them the world.
And the guess is the whole show.
The world you are losing was never the world. It was the talking. Running so quiet and so fast you never once caught it going.
There is no comfort in this. If you came to feel better, you are in the wrong room. I am describing a machine, and the machine is you, and the you is something the machine coughs up, and the part I am about to show you is the talking you never once suspected was running.
The name of the company was never a name. It was an instruction, and almost no one has ever read it as one.
Empty the words.
What is left when they are gone is what this is about. I will tell you now, before you spend a single minute hoping. There is nothing here to practice. What is left at the end is nothing you can hold. And there is no one left to hold it.
PART ONE: THE NAMED WORLD
The World Does Not Arrive Raw
Open your eyes and the room is already named.
You do not see shapes and then decide what they are. The naming is already done before the seeing ever reaches you. Wall. Door. Window. Each one shows up with its word already stuck to it, whole, instant, sorted.
This feels like proof you are in touch with what is real. It is proof of the opposite.
The room is that fast because you did not see it. You recognized it. The word for the room was ready before your eyes opened, and your eyes did almost nothing but nod that the word was close enough.
Most of what you see, you supplied. And what you supplied was words.
This is useful. If you had to meet each thing raw, with no name on it, you would drown before you crossed the room. So it names. The name is fast, and the name is usually good enough.
For a wall, good enough is perfect. The wall does not care what you called it.
But you do not only name walls.
The Pile Of Guesses You Stand Inside
You name the tone of a text before you read it. You name what the silence means.
You name whether the man across the table respects you. You name the day before it happens. You name yourself, over and over, and then you live inside the name.
Watch it happen. A text comes in. Two words. Before you have really read them you already know the tone, already know what it means about you, already feel the small drop or the small lift in your chest. You did not read anything. The word landed before the text did, and you answered the word. You have been answering your own words your whole life and calling it dealing with the world.
And every one of these shows up with the same instant, seamless, done-deal authority as the room. They do not feel like guesses.
They feel like the world.
Stand back and look at what this actually is. It is words. Guess piled on guess, each one so old and so smooth it stopped sounding like a guess. You call the pile reality. You are walking around inside your own talking and calling it the world.
And you are not standing outside the pile, looking in. That is the last one to go. The you that seems to be the eye reading the world is not standing outside it. There is no self under the name. The same word that made the room made the one looking at the room. Same word. Same instant. Neither one was there before it. You and your world come up together out of the same noise, and the second the noise stops, both are gone.
You do not have to do a thing to any of it. You only have to catch the talking in the act. Catch it once, and the pile never feels quite solid again.
Look at what stood between them. Not distance. Not time. There was no between. There was a word, and it made the two of them, and then it filled the space it had just opened and called that space their marriage.
The word did not describe him. It made him. And it made her. Same word. And she took one for herself and answered the other as if it had done something to her.
PART TWO: THE WORD THAT BEARS THE LOAD
Not Every Word Weighs The Same
You could spend a life listing your words and get nowhere, because most of them weigh nothing.
The word for the wall costs you nothing. The word for the fork, the road, the weather. Guesses, every one, but light. The world corrects them cheaply when they miss.
The naming that runs your life is heavier. And there is a shape to the weight.
One word carries the load. Somewhere in the pile is a single word the whole rest of you leans on. The one you paid the most for, wore the deepest, the one that while it holds, holds everything about how you meet a person, a loss, a room, yourself.
Find that one and you have found the word worth emptying. Because when the word that bears the load goes quiet, everything resting on it goes quiet with it.
The Size Of The Reaction Names The Weight
You cannot see the heavy word head on. It is the thing you are seeing with. But you can find it, because its weight leaks out as too much.
When your reaction is way bigger than the thing that set it off, the extra is the word. The gap between what happened and what you felt is a readout of how much was already sitting underneath.
A small thing lands and something drops in your chest that is far too heavy for it. That drop is not the event. The event pulled a trigger. The drop was the weight of a word laid down long ago, yanked tight all at once.
This is where the whole of your suffering actually lives. Not in the event. Not in you as some thing the event happened to. In the old word, pulling tight. The strain you feel is that word straining to hold a you a mile off from a world.
So you find it the way you find something buried. Not by hunting for it. By watching where the ground gives way under a step too small to explain the fall.
Your own overreactions are where the heavy words show themselves. Every one is a needle swinging toward the heaviest word you carry.
Look at what carried the load. Not the lateness. The word the lateness pulled tight.
That is the one. A single word, heavy enough to bend every light thing that touches it into more proof of itself.
You do not have a thousand problems. You have a few heavy words, and a thousand things that keep yanking them tight.
PART THREE: WHERE THE WORD LETS GO
You Cannot Force A Word Off
Here is the correction that undoes a lifetime of trying.
You cannot get a word off by pushing on it. The push is a word. The second you set out to force the guess off the thing, a second guess has already fired, this must not be here, and now two are running where there was one.
Try it. Try to force yourself to stop seeing contempt in her lateness. Notice that the forcing is itself a tight, braced waiting for contempt, wearing the mask of the cure.
The mind that fights its own talking talks harder. It has doubled the noise and called the doubling effort.
That is why thinking your way clear never lasts. You are feeding the exact thing you are trying to starve.
So the forcing goes quiet on its own, once you have seen it was never doing what you thought.
The Small Hand On The Great Weight
There is a place where a small push moves a great weight, and it is not where you have been shoving.
You do not get a word off by taking the word away. You get it off by going so close to the thing that the word cannot keep lying.
The word only wins when you are lazy. He disrespects me. That is a lazy look. It costs nothing and it touches nothing, and that is exactly why it can hold you and him a mile apart, because there is not one real thing in it to catch it lying.
Go close and it cannot stay lazy. The real has no bottom. The word is a cheap sketch. Put one true detail in front of it that the word did not see coming, and the sketch cracks, because the sketch never had that detail in it.
Drop from the verdict to the thing. From he disrespects me to the actual words he actually said, in the actual order, on the actual face. Not what it meant. What was there.
And do not go thinking that going close hands you some real thing that was hiding behind the word. There is no thing waiting behind the door. The thing is a word too, made in the same breath as the you. Go close enough and there is simply no room left to hold a you off from an it.
He did not win the argument. He left it. The word emptied out, not because he beat it, but because he stopped feeding it a story and fed himself the thing instead.
Let The Word Be Wrong
There is one more move, and it is the hardest, because it asks you to hold still exactly where the machine wants to bolt.
A word only empties for good when the thing proves it wrong and the being-wrong is felt, not argued away.
The world hands you the mismatch all day. The word said one thing and the thing did another, and there is a small, exact moment of wrongness. A flinch. A wait. A that-is-not-how-I-called-it.
That mismatch is the only place a word ever actually loosens. And almost everyone slams it shut.
The second the word is caught wrong, a reason rushes in to have been right all along. That is the word defending itself, and the defending is what keeps it heavy across a lifetime of proof against it.
Emptying, this deep, is not a thing you do. It is a thing you fail to do. You feel the wrongness and you do not rush to close it. You do not cook up the reason you were right. You let the surprise stay open long enough for the thing to write over the word.
That open surprise is the emptying, happening. And you did not do it. Not-defending is not a move you make. It is the move you always make, the rushing-in, left undone for once.
PART FOUR: THE ONE WHO NAMES
Walk Past The Words To The One Who Names
You could empty word after word for the rest of your life and never reach the bottom, because there is a source upstream of all of them, and while it runs it lays new ones faster than you can lift the old.
Walk up the stream. Past the reactions. Past the heavy words. To the one doing the naming.
And you find, when you get there, that the one who wants to be free of the words is words too. The loudest words you have got. You are sitting there wanting the noise to stop, and the wanting is the noise. There is nobody in there who is not made of talk.
I want to stop naming. I want to meet things clean. I want to be the empty one.
That wanting is a word. Look right at it.
The want-to-be-empty coughs up a future you who is clear and unnamed, and sets that clean one against the one sitting here, who is not. The gap between them aches. The ache is the whole trouble. You have taken the exact machine that lays a word over everything and aimed it at your words, and now you are sick over your failure to be empty.
You cannot want the word gone, because the wanter is a word. The one turning toward empty is the loudest thing in the room, and what it is screaming, the whole time, is I am not empty yet.
Look at what you are actually trying to do. You are trying to use words to get rid of words. You are trying to talk your way out of the talking. The one who would do it is made of the very stuff he wants gone. It is like trying to bite your own teeth. There is nobody standing behind the words who could throw them out. There are only more words, and the loudest of them is the one saying throw them out.
So ask the question this whole thing has been walking you to. If the wanter is a word, is there anything left for you to do. Any move that is not the wanting in a cleaner coat.
There is one. And it is not a doing.
Wanting reaches. It holds up a state that is not here and strains at it, and the strain is a word, because it is a story stretched over right now and pulling against it. Every try at emptying yourself is this. A grab at an empty future, made by the one thing that cannot be emptied, the grabber.
Looking does not reach. It turns to what is already here and strains at nothing. It wants no state and holds up no future, so it lays no word down. Looking at the argument as argument. The defending as defending. The wanting as wanting. It adds nothing and it changes nothing. It only shows what was already running.
And a word you have looked all the way through cannot go on passing as the world. That is the whole of it. You do not empty the word. You look at it, all the way, and the looking is not something you did, and the emptying is not something you caused. A word seen through has just lost the power to stand in for the thing, and you were not the one who took the power out of it. You only stopped looking through it long enough to look at it.
Now the part everyone cheats on. Do not turn the looking into a looker. There is no clean one standing off, watching your words and quietly fixing them. That clean watcher is the next thing your mouth cooks up, and it is the slipperiest word of the lot. Make the looking a thing you do, and a you has walked right back in.
This is why it can never be a practice. The second you pick up looking as a thing to do, to get somewhere, to become the empty one, you have bent it back into a reach, and the reacher is a word, and you are wanting again under a quieter name. Looking done for a payoff is not looking. It is one more want.
So there is nothing to do, and you are not helpless. The one move that works is not in the class of moves. It is the looking that wants nothing, and it is here in any second you are not reaching. Which is to say, any second the wanter has, for a moment, shut up.
This is why the people most desperate to be clear are the least clear alive. The wanting is the noise. They have built a tight little self out of trying to loosen, and the trying is the tightest thing they do.
The Same Word, Turned On Others
Watch this run outward and you will see it wearing its best-looking mask.
The one who learns to read the words in other people, to see through everyone, to hold the leverage and never be the one who gets read. That reader feels like power. It is a cage.
You can read another person’s true word. It is real. Most of what people call reading people is exactly this. But you never find it in what they say. Their words are the surface they control. The true word leaks where reacting costs them something. In the flinch before the arranged answer. In the thing they keep circling back to. In the thing they defend way past what the moment asked for.
Read the leak, not the talk, and you will see people clearer than they see themselves.
But the one who cannot stop reading is not free. He is the most covered-up operator in the room. He cannot sit with another person without pricing them, cannot put the leverage down, cannot meet a face without running the word for it. He is run by the very naming he is so proud of catching in everyone else.
Upstream of the seeing-through-everyone is an old word, laid down at some old cost, that safety is staying one move ahead. And that word names everyone before he meets them, which is the whole definition of the veil he thinks he got out of.
That is the trap. It is also the door. They are the same place.
PART FIVE: WHAT IS LEFT
There Is No Room Waiting
Now the last thing, and it is the floor, except there is no floor.
You have been reading this as if empty were a place you could get to if you emptied hard enough. A quiet room under the noise. A clean space that was there before the first word, waiting for you to come home to.
There is no such room. That is the last word, and the most flattering one of all, because it turns the whole thing into a homecoming. It hands you somewhere to arrive. And the one who arrives is a you, and the somewhere is a state, and you have just cooked up the exact two you were told were made of talk.
There is no ground under the talking to fall back into. No room that was there before the word. No quiet state with your name on it. When the word goes quiet there is no clean you meeting a bare world in a room that was always there. There is no you left to arrive. No room to arrive in. No arriving.
You did not make a single one of those moments, and you did not go anywhere in them. The word simply did not come for a few seconds, and where a you and a world usually stand apart there was no apart, because the apart was only ever the word, holding itself open.
So there is nothing to build and nowhere to get to. There is only the talking, running under the one who was trying so hard to stop it, and that one is just more talking, and the whole of the method, if you can call it that, is to quit feeding it.
What Is Left When The Word Goes Quiet
When even the wanter is seen as one more word, something stops.
Nobody is pushing. Nobody is defending. No clean future you held up against the noisy one here. And with nobody pushing and nobody defending, the word goes quiet on its own, because the only thing that ever held it tight was the struggle to get rid of it.
And what is left is not a better world. I promised you that at the start and I am keeping it now. Nothing is added. No clarity comes down. No light.
Now the part every telling of this flinches on, and I will not. What is left is not the thing itself, seen plain at last on the far side of a word that finally lifted. There is no far side. The word did not lift off some waiting thing. The word made a waiting thing and a waiting you at the same time, and when it goes quiet, both go.
Not met, either.
There is no one left standing off from anything to meet it, and no thing left standing alone to be met. The same word that made the one who would meet made the thing that would be met, and when the you goes quiet the world goes quiet in the same breath. There is no it over there being exactly what it is, because there is no over there.
Call it nothing, and mean it flat. Not nothing like something is missing. Missing needs an edge where it got cut out, and the edge was the word. Pull the word out, nothing is gone. And do not you dare turn it into some big warm Oneness sitting there being one. Oneness does not show up. There is nobody it could show up to. Just this. Nothing splitting it.
This is what the words were emptied for. Not to reach a state. Not to lift the word off a thing. To quit standing in the one spot the naming was standing, which was the spot where a namer and a named were being coughed up, together, in the same breath, forever.
The naming does not end. The machine that makes the words is the machine that keeps you breathing, and it will talk until you die.
But a word you can see through is no longer the world. It comes, and it is seen coming, and it goes, and where it stood there is no thing waiting and no one waiting.
She did not reach the nothing. There was no nothing to reach, and no her to reach it. The word simply did not come, for a few seconds, and where it did not come there were not two.
What This Is Not
This is not enlightenment. I have handed you no state to get to.
This is not a practice. I have given you nothing to do at dawn to become the empty one. The second you make emptying a practice, a watchman starts pacing, checking whether you are empty enough, and the watchman is the tightest word in the house.
This is not knowledge to keep. The instant I see my words becomes a thing you own, it is a self, and it names and defends and covers like all the rest, and you are the man with the scorecard again.
And it is not a homecoming. There is no floor under the noise you are coming back to. No thing standing patient behind the word. No empty room that was always yours. If you leave here carrying a there beyond the here, a real world waiting to be reached, a quiet ground waiting to be stood on, you have laid the heaviest word of all and called it freedom.
U.G. Krishnamurti said everything he offered was to be thrown out. This too. Especially this. And throw out with it the thing itself, and the empty room, and the ground, because those are the last words, the quiet ones, the ones that feel like the answer.
And throw out the talking-machine too. There is no machine behind it all, quietly making two out of one. That is one more word, laid on top so it could be said at all. It is not what is really going on underneath, because there is no underneath, and nothing going on there. That was the last diagram, and a diagram is a word, and it goes out with the rest.
Read it, let it do its one job of showing you the machine, and let it go.
What is left when it is gone was never in here, and it is not a thing on the far side of the page either. There is no far side. It was the reading, making a reader and a read the whole time, and no reader and no read where the reading stopped.

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
I told you at the start I would take the world from you.
I have. Not the world. There is no world to take. I have taken the you and the world you carved out of nothing and swore was a plain fact. There was never a space between you and anything. There was you, talking, so fast and so quiet you never once heard it, and out of the talking came a you here and a world there, every waking second of your life.
I have not handed you a better one in its place. I have handed you nothing. There is nobody here I could hand it to.
Do not practice this. Do not maintain it. Do not become the one who empties his words. That one is the heaviest word left. And do not go looking for the thing itself, or the empty room, or the ground. There is no far side to find them on.
Watch the next word land on the next thing. Watch it cough up a you and a world and fill the space between. Watch the one who wants the words gone. That one is a word too.
See it, and the word goes quiet, not because anyone quieted it, and where it stood there is no thing waiting and no one waiting.
The mouth keeps talking. It always will. But a word you can see through stops being the world.
And there is no other side to it. There never was.
