The Move That Walks a Surface Answer Down to Its Root

How to take their words as your next question and strip one layer of cause each time


This is one move, pulled out of the larger skill of Inquiry and given its own room so you can drill it until it fires on its own.

The Question Chain is the move of depth. The first answer a person gives is almost never the real one. It names a cause, but a shallow cause, the first thing that came to mind, the one that lays the blame somewhere convenient and stops. The chain is how you go down. You take their exact answer and make it the input to your next question, and you do it again, and again, peeling one layer of assumption off each time, until what is left at the bottom is something they can actually move with their own hands.

A skill is not a concept you hold. It is a move you make when a specific moment arrives. So this document is built as the move, and only the move.

You do not study this. You catch the trigger in your day, you run the move, you watch what happens. The first time it is deliberate and clumsy. The hundredth time it is who you are.


THE MOVE

TRIGGER. They give you a first answer that names a cause but stops at the surface. “Labor cost is too high.” “It is the turnover.” “The team is not motivated.” It sounds like an explanation, and it is actually a place to stop looking.

LOOK-ALIKE. You have reached something concrete and actionable with the resources on hand. Stop there. The chain is not a virtue to be performed to its maximum depth, it is a tool to reach the actionable layer, and once you have reached it, drilling further is interrogation. It teaches the other person to dread the conversation, because no answer they give is ever accepted, and a chain that never ends does not feel like inquiry, it feels like a trap. The skill is as much knowing where the bottom is as knowing how to get there.

MOVE. Take their exact words as the input to your next question. Not your paraphrase of their words, their actual words, because the moment you swap their language for yours you have started a new problem on your ground instead of going deeper into theirs. Each question strips one layer of assumption off the answer above it. Labor cost is too high becomes what is driving the labor cost, and the answer to that becomes the next input, and so on down. Each answer narrows the space. Each layer is closer to something concrete than the one above it. The surface answer is wide and vague and blameless, and the bottom answer is narrow and specific and movable, and the only way from one to the other is one honest question at a time, each built from the last answer given.

EXACT. The base move: “[Their exact answer]. What is driving that?” Then take the new answer and run it again.

The variations are just different ways of asking what is underneath:

“[Their answer]. And what is behind that?”

“Say the turnover stopped tomorrow. Would the problem be gone, or would something else still be there?”

“That is the what. What is the why underneath it?”

“If that is the cause, what is the cause of the cause?”

You stop when the answer is no longer a condition to explain but an action to take. The tell is the grammar. Surface answers are nouns and states, the turnover, the cost, the morale. Bottom answers are verbs, things a person could do on Monday. When the answer becomes something doable, the chain is finished, and one more why would only insult them.


WHERE THE CHAIN ENDS

The danger of this move is not stopping too shallow. It is not stopping at all. A person who has learned that the first answer is never the real one can fall in love with the descent and keep asking why long after the useful bottom has been reached, and what began as inquiry curdles into an interrogation that the other person comes to dread. Every chain has a floor, and finding it is half the skill.

The floor is the layer where the answer becomes something the person can act on with what they have. Above that layer, every answer is a condition, a state of the world that explains the problem but cannot be directly changed. The cost is high. The morale is low. These are things to understand, not things to do. Below a certain point the answer turns into an action, a specific move a specific person could make this week, and the moment it does, you have hit the floor and you stop.

Stopping is itself a move, and it deserves a sentence. When you reach the floor, you mark it. You say the thing back to them, so the bottom of the chain is named and shared and does not evaporate. The whole descent was in service of that one reachable cause, and if you slide past it in your hunger to go deeper, you lose the very thing the chain was dug to find.


HOW IT FITS

This is the fourth of the six moves that make up the skill of Inquiry. It does one thing. It takes a shallow first answer and walks it down, one question at a time, to the reachable root, by feeding each answer back as the next question.

It is the one move about depth. The recognition moves catch your reflexes in the first instant. The holding moves keep your hands and voice off the thinking once it starts. This move is what you do across a whole conversation, the long descent from the symptom everyone names to the cause almost no one looks at. It is also the move most dependent on the others, because you cannot run a chain if you hand over your own answer halfway down, and you cannot run it if you fill every silence before the next answer can form.

It is built on a single piece of respect, that you take the other person’s exact words and build the next question from them. That is what keeps the descent theirs. A chain made of your paraphrases is just you thinking out loud with their permission. A chain made of their own words, each one cracked open to find the next, is the other person walking down to their own root while you hold the rope.

That is the whole point of this one move. Not to accept the answer you are given. To take it, honor it by using its exact words, and ask the one question that opens the layer beneath it, until the two of you reach the floor where something can finally be done.
